Wisdom Teeth Removal

man with white hair smilingWhile third molars, better known as “wisdom teeth,” are believed to have once been necessary to human survival, modern times prove to have little need for such teeth. It is often found that when they come in, there is very little room for them in the mouth and they are misaligned, stuck just below the surface of the gum line, damaging surrounding nerves, or causing aching pain. Even if your wisdom teeth have yet to induce any of these symptoms, Smiles Are Us may recommend removal as a precautionary measure.

Third Molar Extraction Consultations

When it comes to molars, a thorough examination that includes an X-ray of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding oral anatomy is necessary to plan surgery. This examination will be used to determine molar placement in relation to your nerves and other teeth and decide the complexity of the specific presenting case. Because each person has a unique dental makeup, Smiles Are Us is proud to extend individualised, optimum care.

Comfort As Needed

At our practice, we hope to see you as relaxed as possible during any tooth extraction. Sometimes, pain relief inhalants are necessary to provide comfort and ease prior to surgery. While we do offer nitrous oxide and other types of dental sedation and analgesia, we must perform an in-depth analysis of your medical and oral health history before proceeding. The bottom line is we want what is best for you.

On the Fence?

If you are unsure about the condition of your wisdom teeth, our skilled dentists are glad to answer any questions you may have. Our periodic X-rays during your routine dental care visits allow us to monitor your teeth and determine if your teeth are in a healthy position. We will work with you to provide the quality care that you deserve.

Wisdom tooth extractions are common yet strategic procedures. The Smiles Are Us staff aims to create an atmosphere of comfort and reassurance that allows for a smooth, successful surgery. Self-Care After Your Oral Surgery

Because some discomfort is to be expected following your wisdom teeth removal, we suggest that you take a day or two off from work or school to recover. Try to take it easy and spend time resting. Avoid hard foods and instead opt for soft foods. These include applesauce, pudding, gelatin, ice cream and yoghurt, which are all easy to eat and gentle on extraction areas.
You also should take medication as directed. During the first 24-48 hours, alternate a cold compress for 20 minutes and leave it off for 20 minutes to reduce swelling.

Should you need to have sutures removed, you will come back to the practice approximately 3-4 days following your surgery. In the event you experience pain, fever or infection, please contact us straightaway.
