Not every dental injury looks the same. A hard hit to the face can cause very different problems depending on how and where the impact lands. The three most common scenarios at the game are a knocked-out tooth, a chipped or broken tooth, and unexplained tooth pain following a collision.

A knocked-out tooth is a time-sensitive situation. Early assessment may provide more management options. A chipped or broken tooth may look minor, but depending on how deep the break goes, the nerve can be involved. Even mild pain can still indicate underlying damage. Tooth pain after a collision without visible damage still needs attention. Root and ligament injuries aren’t always visible, and an X-ray is often needed to assess what may be happening beneath the surface.

What to Do in Each Scenario

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick up the tooth by the crown only. Rinse it briefly under clean water without scrubbing. If possible, gently reinsert it into the socket and hold it there. If not, place it in milk or tuck it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist. Get to a dentist as quickly as you can. Bring the tooth with you regardless.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Rinse with warm water and apply gentle pressure if there’s bleeding. Collect any fragment and keep it moist in milk or saliva. Avoid biting on that side and be cautious with hot and cold. Arrange a dental appointment promptly.

Pain After a Collision

Don’t wait to have it assessed. Arrange an examination and X-rays. An examination and X-rays can help identify injuries that may not be visible straight away.
