What Are Cavities?

Woman ready to brush teethCavities, one of the world’s most common health problems, are permanently damaged areas on the surface of your teeth due to tooth decay that result in miniscule holes. Even those who brush and floss diligently can still end up with cavities.

More often than not, such decay can lead to food constantly catching between your teeth, sensitivity to sweet foods or drinks, and noticeable pain when biting down. Our practice is committed to becoming involved as early as possible to fill your cavity and prevent further damage.

Act Soon

If cavities remain untreated for extended periods of time, you can risk developing a tooth abscess that can become infected and lead to life-threatening complications such as sepsis. The longer you wait to address tooth decay, the more likely you are to need a crown or a root canal down the road. Smiles On Grenfell offers simple fillings to rebuild missing tooth structure, restoring strength and function in the tooth to halt decay. Now is the time to make your appointment!

For more than a century, cavities were filled with a combination of various metals, including silver and mercury. Conventional silver fillings aren’t aesthetically pleasing though. They can detract from an otherwise stunning smile. According to some recent research, the expansive nature of amalgam fillings can fracture and crack teeth. Fortunately, metal fillings are a thing of the past.

These days, we fill cavities and small cracks in your teeth using composite tooth-coloured fillings. These consist of non-toxic resin that can match the colour of your tooth, so it blends in flawlessly with the rest of the tooth structure. These tooth-coloured fillings are just as strong as silver ones, but they give you a more pleasing smile.

With composite fillings at our Adelaide CBD practice, you won’t have to feel self-conscious showing your smile with traditional amalgam fillings. Now you can smile confidently as your tooth-coloured fillings are virtually invisible.

First and foremost, the target tooth will be numbed to fend off discomfort during the procedure. Next, we will remove the damaged surfaces of the tooth, apply the filling, and allow it to take shape. We will then match the shade of the repair with the colour of your natural enamel. Last but not least, a bright light will be shown on the focus area to cure the filling and lock it into place.

Because you may have some sensitivity that can last from a few hours to a few days, avoid eating any types of food that could damage the filling. These include nuts, hard candy and other types of sticky food. Instead, choose soft, healthy foods such as smoothies or vegetable soup. Gradually, you can introduce harder foods and hot and cold foods back into your diet.
